AMRITSAR: A cross-border espionage racket was busted on Saturday with the arrest of a serving Indian Army jawan who was allegedly honey-trapped by an agent of Pakistan's ISI into giving away highly sensitive and classified information, State Special Operation Cell (SSOC), Amritsar, claimed.
According to an official release issued on Saturday, the SSOC, Amritsar, arrested serving Indian Army jawan Krunal Kumar Baria, a resident of Panchamhalas, Gujarat, who was posted with the IT Cell at Ferozpur cantonment. He was allegedly in touch with various Pak ISI agents through social media apps. He has been accused of passing highly sensitive and classified information about the Army to his Pak-based handlers, in lieu of money, according to the release.
The release added that during the preliminary investigations, it had come to light that the accused came in touch with a Pakistan Intelligence Officer (PIO), namely Sidra Khan, through Facebook in 2020. After connecting through Facebook and Messenger, they shifted to WhatsApp and other private messaging and calling apps. The accused was in touch with the PIO on her two Pakistani mobile numbers and one Indian number, added the release.
“It has been revealed that the accused was allured by the PIO through her treacherous tricks to work for the ISI, as a result of which he shared many classified documents with her via encrypted apps. During the preliminary inspection of his mobile phone, many classified documents have been found” said the release.
A case under sections 3, 4, 5 and 9 of the Official Secrets Act and 120-B of Indian Penal Code was registered at SSOC police station in Amritsar on Saturday, said the release, adding that the army authorities had been appraised about it.
“Investigations are being conducted to assess the actual amount of damage caused by the accused. It is also being ascertained if the accused was working alone or he had a team at his disposal,” said the release.
