West Brom’s Championship clash with Bristol City at the Hawthorns was delayed by 15 minutes on Saturday after a medical emergency involving a home fan.
The club confirmed the news with a statement shortly before the scheduled 3pm kick-off, saying the match would be put back while the supporter received treatment.
A club statement on Twitter announced: “Owing to a medical emergency involving a fan inside the stadium, kick-off has been delayed by 15 minutes.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the supporter. We’re all with you.”
The spectator was carried away on a stretcher but was conscious and gave a thumbs-up gesture to the crowd on the way out.
It comes less than a week after a similar situation involving a Newcastle supporter during their 3-2 home Premier League defeat to Tottenham last Sunday.
talkSPORT reporter Geoff Peters was live at Hawthorns, and described the scenes on air on Saturday afternoon.
“We did see some of the medical team down in this stand, there appeared to be a supporter carried away on a stretcher,” he said.
“We obviously don’t know the level of what the problem was there, but the person who was on the stretcher was applauding the West Brom fans, who were all applauding them.
“So it would perhaps appear not to be that serious.”
Geoff was joined by former Liverpool Women’s striker Courtney Sweetman-Kirk, who hopes the issue is not as serious as last week’s scenes at Newcastle.
“We hope that it’s nothing too serious,” said the striker, who now plays for Sheffield United in the FA Women’s Championship.
“We’ve seen over the last few weeks and that incident at Newcastle in terms of how serious it can be.
“But the medical staff appear to be there quickly, so hopefully that fan is being attended to.”
Only last weekend was Newcastle’s Premier League clash with Tottenham at St James’ Park, suspended for 20 minutes towards the end of the first half, as a similar medical emergency in the stands became apparent.
Players from both teams alerted referee Andre Marriner and medical staff after fans in the stands made them aware of the situation.
Spurs pair Sergio Reguilon and Eric Dier also played key roles in making sure the match was stopped and the man swiftly received treatment, including CPR and shocks from a defibrillator.
The game resumed after the fan was stabilised and taken to hospital, and the north east club confirmed later on Sunday evening that he was ‘stable and responsive’.
