16 die in explosion in Russian gunpowder factory

Moscow: According to an explosion and fire at a gunpowder factory in Russia, 16 people were killed.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the blast hit the Elastik factory in the Ryazan region, about 270 kilometers (about 167 miles) southeast of Moscow.

Officials initially said the blast left seven people dead and nine missing, but hours later they announced that all the missing people were dead. One person was admitted to hospital with serious injuries, according to local officials.

According to the ministry, 170 emergency service workers and 50 vehicles are involved in dealing with the fire.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations said the explosion was caused by an unspecified failure during the production process.
