Gurgaon: A man was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in
Panipat for hacking his
nephew to death over a property dispute some two years ago. Sukhbir had fled after committing the crime in October 2019, but was arrested by the local police within 24 hours.
Panipat’s sessions judge Manisha Batra handed down the punishment to Sukhbir on Thursday after holding him guilty of the crime. She observed that Sukhbir had attacked Sanjay with the intention of causing his death and ordered him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for life.
On October 11, 2019, the Model Town police station in Panipat received a call regarding the
murder of 27-year-old Sanjay, a resident of Binjhol village. The victim’s brother Sandeep subsequently filed a complaint, alleging that Sanjay, a driver by profession, was killed by their uncle Sukhbir.
In his complaint, Sandeep alleged that his elder brother had an altercation with Sukhbir over a property dispute some days prior to the murder. Though the matter was then resolved due to Sandeep’s intervention, Sukhbir had threatened Sanjay of dire consequences, as per the complaint.
On the fateful day, Sanjay went to his another uncle Subhash’s house in the neighbourhood, where Sukhbir was also staying. Hearing Sanjay’s screams, Sandeep rushed to Subhash’s house and found Sukhbir attacking his brother with an axe. Sukhbir fled the spot but was arrested the next day.
Public prosecutor Arvind Sharma said there was overwhelming evidence on record to prove that Sanjay’s death was due to multiple injuries inflicted on him by the convict. “The case had two eyewitnesses, besides the murder weapon was recovered by police. The medical and forensic evidence helped nail the convict.”
