BHUBANESWAR: Puri police arrested a history-sheeter after opening fire on him on Wednesday. Biju Behera (35) was wanted after he along with his associate Kalia Muduli (34) shot at and injured a woman and attacked another family in Puri, demanding extortion money late on Tuesday night.
Alarmed by the two offences, Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh formed four separate teams comprising senior police officers to arrest Behera and Muduli, who were notorious criminals and booked in several cases, mostly extortion and assault in Puri.
"Our team got a tip-off that Behera was hiding near Chandanpur on the outskirts of Puri. When our personnel surrounded him and asked him to surrender, he opened fire at our staff. In self-defence, our personnel fired one bullet at him. The bullet hit his left leg," the Puri SP said.
The police overpowered him and took him to a local hospital where his condition is said to be stable. During the tussle, sub-inspector Dibya Ranjan Panda of Kumbharapada police station sustained minor injuries. Police seized a pistol and three bullets from Behera. After the encounter, police raided different places and arrested Behera's associate Muduli.
