Right to protest but they can’t block roads indefinitely, says Supreme Court on farmers’ protest

The Supreme Court on Thursday said that the farmers have the right to protest but the roads cannot be blocked indefinitely. The court also asked the farmers’ union to file their response on a petition seeking the removal of protesting farmers from the road.

The Supreme Court gave SKM and other farmers’ unions to file their response in four weeks to file their response. And, now the hearing of the matter will take place on December 7.

A bench of Justices SK Kaul and CT Ravikumar asked the Samyukta Kisan Morcha that do they have a right to block the road.

To which, SKM said that the road management can be improved by the police and if they cannot handle that then they should allow the farmers to protest at Ram Lila ground at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

The Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also cited the Republic Day violence and said that the incident took place even when the farmer union signed an undertaking that there will be no violence during the tractor rally on January 26, but violence did take place.

A PIL was filed by a Noida-resident Monicca Agarwal in which she complained of the delays in a daily commute that is being caused by the road blockage owing to the ongoing farmers’ protests. The Supreme Court was hearing the same plea in which they said that ultimately, some solution has to be found, and they are not against the right to protest even as a legal challenge is pending but roads can’t be blocked.

In other news, a day after Aryan Khan’s bail plea was rejected, the Narcotics Control Bureau has conducted raids at Shah Rukh Khan’s Mannat and Ananya Panday Mumbai’s residence.
