Domestic tourism picks pace in pandemic times

As countries around the world deal with vaccination drives, health security and travel policies, domestic tourism has emerged as a strong winner. After the ruin of tourism demand due to the pandemic, the number of domestic travelers is gradually increasing. People are now exploring and discovering destinations within their own country — from the foothills of Himachal to the beaches of Kanyakumari, from the natural beauty of the northeast to the temples at Palitana, and everything in between.

Only 19 months earlier, Indian travelerschose foreign destinations over domestic ones. However, they are no longer doing that. Travel restrictions have helped push travel demand inside the country. However, it remains to be seen whether this demand is transient or permanent.

With 3.27 lakh passengers flying on October 18, this marked the busiest travel day since the start of the pandemic. Packed airport terminals and growing travel demand are once again becoming normal. Airports like Mumbai and Delhi have brought forward opening dates for domestic terminals to meet increasing demand. Airports are once again witnessing the organized chaos that is routine affair. However, there is one major difference. Now, majority of this travel is driven by leisure demand.

Goa is expected to be the first city where 5-star hotels will once again command pre-Covid rates very soon.Kolkatawitnessed healthy booking levels for the Durga Puja. Diwali bookings to cities like Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi and Jaipur are also extremely strong.
