Greater Noida: A 38-year-old
traffic police
constable, who had stopped a man accused of using a fake registration number and got into his
car to talk to him, was
abducted and driven around in the vehicle for about 20km before being rescued by cops.
The accused
driver has been identified as Sachin Rawal (32).
Police have learnt that he had stolen a blue Swift from an agency in Gurgaon and had been using a fake registration plate to escape the cops.
Rawal came under the police’s scanner when a man complained that he was getting challans for offences he was not involved in. It came to the fore that the fake number plate used by Rawal was actually registered in the name of the complainant, Jaiveer Singh. So, every time Rawal was caught violating a traffic rule, Singh got the message.
Around 9.45am on Sunday, constable Virendra Poria stopped a blue Swift — the complainant had the same model — near Surajpur intersection. He went up to the driver (Rawal) and told him to park the car by the side of the road. When Rawal didn’t, Poria got inside the car.
“Another man was getting challans because Rawal had been using a fake registration number. When the car approached near the Surajpur junction, I asked the driver to park the car by the side of the road. I also sat inside the vehicle. But he locked the doors and stepped on the accelerator,” the constable said.
Poria said he was too shocked to react for a few minutes. “He was driving rashly at 160kmph and blowing the horn repeatedly. I realised he won’t stop the car if I tell him. So, I informed the police control room, which tracked the location of the vehicle. A police team was deployed to stop him,” he added.
The car had reached Dadri when Rawal slammed the brakes and pushed the constable out. He tried to flee, but was stopped by the police team.
DCP (traffic) Ganesh Saha said an FIR had been lodged against Rawal at Surajpur police station for abduction and criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duties.
Senior sub-inspector Santosh Kumar Shukla said the Swift was stolen. “He had stolen the car during a test drive from an agency in Gurgaon. There were instances when he refilled the car but sped away without making payment,” he added.
