Luxembourg looks set to lead Aidan O’Brien’s charge in Saturday’s Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster as the Ballydoyle maestro chases his record-equalling tenth victory in the prestigious Group One.
Described by his trainer as “very special” at home, Luxembourg is already favourite for next year’s Epsom Derby after making it two from two with a facile success in the Group Two Beresford Stakes at the Curragh last month.
The Camelot colt is one of five juveniles left in by O’Brien with recent Group Three winner Glounthaune, as well as Howth, Aikhal and Stone Age, also among his possibilities.
Galway maiden winner Buckaroo could represent his son Joseph with comfortable Curragh scorer Sissoko a contender for brother Donnacha, while Jim Bolger may chase back-to-back triumphs in the €240,000 contest through Leopardstown maiden winner McTigue.
The best of the English challenge may be Royal Patronage after Mark Johnston’s two-year-old brought up a hat-trick of wins when landing last month’s Royal Lodge, where he edged out Charlie Appleby’s highly regarded Coroebus.
