Four Colorado Springs police officers involved in the shooting of an armed bank robbery suspect have been identified.
The police shooting happened at about 4 p.m. Oct. 7 at Maizeland Road and North Academy Boulevard, police said.
On Tuesday the officers were identified as: Sgt. Matt McLain, Officer Anthony Carey, Officer Alejandra Exley, and Officer Grant Nelson. All four are assigned as detectives to the police department’s robbery unit, according to a news release. McLain and Carey have been with the department since 2011, Exley since 2013 and Nelson since 2014.
When the detectives approached the suspect, at least one shot was fired at them, police said. At least one detective returned fire. The suspect was hit by gunfire and taken to a local hospital. The detectives were not injured and were placed on administrative leave per the department’s policy.
The police shooting is being investigated by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
