Chris Eubank Sr believes Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin would have struggled against a prime Nigel Benn as former foes reunite live on talkSPORT

Chris Eubank Sr told Conor Benn he believes his father, Nigel, would have beaten Gennady Golovkin in his prime and given Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez a ‘50/50 fight.’

Benn and Eubank shared one of the most vitriolic and enthralling rivalries inside a British ring in history, yet are now at peace following the conclusions of their respective careers.

Now, with their fighting days long behind them, the former foes are touring the country together to celebrate their iconic clashes.

As well as their promotional responsibilities, Benn and Eubank are championing the careers of their sons, Conor and Chris Jr, as they try to navigate the professional waters of professional boxing.

During a conversation between Chris Sr and Conor on talkSPORT, the burgeoning welterweight contender asked Eubank how he felt he would have fared alongside some of the current middleweight greats of this era.

Never one to miss a beat, the former two-weight world champion instead pitted Benn against the legends of this generation in fictitious match-ups and had an interesting theory.

“Well, I’m not going to talk of me as it may seem self-effacing, so let me speak of your father,” he said on Breakfast.

“What GGG would do, he would come for a fight – he is not looking to run. So he would be walking into dynamite.

“I would pick Nigel to be the winner because GGG is great, but he is nowhere near the calibre of Gerald McClellan,” he added in a nod to the former middleweight champion who was forced to retire from boxing with a severe brain injury in 1995 after fighting Benn.

“So when you look at Canelo also, that’s a 50/50 fight because he has all the skills and the obedience in learning to perfect the art.

“He has all of that with him, he is brilliant.”
