Three new EV models, developed by Foxconn Technology under its MIH open platform over the past year, as well as related software and hardware solutions take center stage at the Hon Hai Tech Day 2021 (HHTD21) that opens today, highlighting the pivotal position of EVs in the group's future tech development roadmaps.
Participants at the vent are allowed to ride and experience Foxconn's C- and E-segment electric sedans and electric bus while also browsing its latest achievements in the development of crucial components, software designs and hardware platforms in the EV field.
In its second edition, the HHTD21 features four major themes: passion, technology, software and experience, with forums on digital transformation and software design development also arranged for participants.
Announcing the formation of the MIH platform at HHTD20 and MIH Alliance later, Foxconn has, over the past year, not only entered cooperation deals with many global carmakers including Stellantis, Fisker and Taiwan's Yulon Group, but also rolled out three physical EV models for road tests, demonstrating its determination to gain ground in the sector.
Statistics show there were around only 2.9 million new energy vehicles sold worldwide in 2020, accounting for less than 4% of global car sales, but EVs have been widely recognized as the main growth driver for the global car market in the future amid the ever-mounting awareness of carbon emission reductions, generous promotional subsidy provisions from governments and significant improvements in EV technology, performance and pricing, according to industry sources.
To explore huge potential business opportunities, many new entrants and existing automakers are all gearing up to strengthen production and sales of EVs, which in turn will accelerate horizontal, vertical and cross-industry cooperation deals among related partners, leading to a rapid expansion in EV ecosystems, the sources continued.
Foxconn is poised to gain from the rapid development of the EV industry, and its newly-developed electric buses are expected to hit the roads in southern Taiwan starting 2022 as its first batch of EVs to bring in commercial benefits, the sources added.
