CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu school education department on Monday relaxed the upper age limit for teachers recruitment by five years in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In its notification issued on September 9 for postgraduate teachers recruitment, the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) announced the upper age limit for general category as 40 years and for reserved categories as 45 years.
The state government issued an order on September 13 relaxing the age limit for direct recruitment by two years. However, the TRB did not relax the upper age limit.
Teacher aspirants petitioned the school education department to relax the upper age limit as the board had not conducted any recruitment exams in the past two years in view of Covid-19 pandemic. The representatives stated that they could not apply for the exam due to the age limit.
"The age limit for teachers has been increased from 40 years to 45 years for general category and from 45 years to 50 years for reserved category. The order will be applicable for postgraduate teachers recruitment as well," an order issued by school education secretary Kakarla Usha said.
The said relaxation is applicable to the notifications issued only till December 31, 2022. "From January 1, 2023, the upper age limit for general category will be 42 years and for reserved categories it will be 47 years," she said in the order.
