Harry Maguire endured a difficult return to Leicester City on his Manchester United comeback as his side slipped to a 4-2 defeat on Saturday afternoon.
The England international was a surprise inclusion by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after only returning to training from a calf injury on Friday and immediately took the captain’s armband.
However, the former Foxes defender looked shaky at the back and he was disposed by Kelechi Iheanacho in the build up to a wonderful equalising goal from Youri Tielemans.
United had taken the lead in the first half of the game thanks to an absolute screamer from Mason Greenwood, whose rasping effort from 25 yards pinged past Kasper Schmeichel off the post.
Yet after Tielemans found the equaliser, the home side pressed home their advantage and got the goal they deserved when the ball found its way to Caglar Soynucu from a goalmouth scramble and he had the simple task of tapping home.
Solskjaer’s superstar attacking charges were rather subdued as Leicester delivered the type of performance synonymous with boss Brendan Rodgers.
The hosts were vibrant on the ball and terrier-like off it and fully deserving of the victory, with Tielemans running the midfield.
Yet they were undone when a simple long ball from Victor Lindelof scythed the defence wide open and Marcus Rashford lashed the ball past Schmeichel.
United had not tasted defeat on the road in 29 games – a run stretching back to January 2020 – yet they were soon glaring defeat in the face after a wonderful goal from Jamie Vardy.
Ayoze Perez was exceptional from the bench and his run and cross found Vardy unmarked in the box and the veteran sliced a wonderful half-volley into the top corner with delicious aplomb.
The streak was officially brought to an end when Maguire lost substitute Patson Daka from a free-kick and the striker had the simple task of tapping in to score his first Leicester City and condemn United to defeat.
The Red Devils have Atalanta on Wednesday in the Champions League, before the unenviable task of playing Liverpool at Old Trafford next Sunday.
