The task was monumental as the Jasper Bulldogs traveled to Carthage to face off against the No.1 ranked 4A Division II team in the state.
The Carthage Bulldogs are 76-1 in their last 77 games and they are the odds on favorite to capture a ninth state title in the past 12 years.
Carthage went for a first down on a fourth-and nine from their own 27 yard line, and ended up scoring on a 73-yard catch and run to take an early 7-0 lead.
Those points would be all that Carthage needed to win the game.
Jasper’s defense repeatedly made plays to keep them in the game. They got a couple of early turnovers, but the offense was unable to capitalize and score.
Carthage scored in the second quarter to lead 14-0 at halftime, and added two more touchdowns in the second half while shutting Jasper out to win the game 28-0.
Jasper hopes to get back on track as they host Shepherd for their homecoming game this Friday night.
They have a game at Center and will host Madisonville to close out the regular season.
At 1-1 in a six team district, they can still punch their playoff ticket with another win.
Two more wins would give them better position, and winning the three remaining games would make them the district runner up.
