Ukhrul, October 05 2021: Soraphung village has derecognized the village hereditary headman Yaruingam Lasuh for violation of customary laws of Chakheshang tribe.
The decision to derecognise the present headman was announced by Soraphung Village Council (SRC) at a press conference held at Phungreitang in Ukhrul.
SRC chairman Melipa Lasuh said, Soraphung village in August 2018 unanimously adopted a resolution to dissolve the Village body headed by Yaruingam and constituted a new public body " Soraphung Village Council'' for the governance and look into the affairs of the villagers.
The headman had violated the Chakheshang customary law by selling a plot of land, arable paddy land allotted to the headman to some individual person without the knowledge and approval of the public.
He said, Soraphung village has a traditional practice of reservation of paddy land and forest for independently utilizing every village headman for their family maintenance since from ancestral time.
The present headman defied the custom and violated the sanctity of Soraphung tradition and sold off all this land during his reign.
The village has now denounced him and further urged the public and the Government department, NGOs, CSOs and others to directly root out all correspondents through Soraphung Village Council.
