Vietnam's HCM City faces labour shortage as migrant workers leave

Vietnam largest metropolis Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City is apparently staring at a labour shortage problem and further disruption to manufacturing as tens of thousands of migrant workers left the city over the last weekend with the country announcing easing of a months-long COVID-19 lockdown. The country’s economy witnessed a record gross domestic product slump in the third quarter.

The migrant worker’s primary concern is they would get stuck again if another COVID wave strikes. Government authorities have urged workers not to leave the city.

Labour shortage in HCM is expected to add to the woes of businesses that are already struggling due the pandemic.

Suppliers for Nike and Adidas suspended operations in Vietnam earlier this year. Fashion brands are also increasingly turning away from low-cost manufacturing hubs in Asia, a global newswire reported.

Vietnam has one of the lowest vaccination rates in Southeast Asia. More than three-fourths of COVID-related deaths in the country have been from HCM City.
