A Russian Actress And Director Are All Set To Film The First Movie In Space, Beating Tom Cruise To The Punch!
Sometimes when I think about how far we’ve come from where we started off, it honestly blows my mind. I mean, we’re living in a time where even space is not the limit for us! And I’m not just talking about rockets that are pushing space tourism, I’m also talking about movies getting made in space. Sounds crazy, right? But it is true! After reports that Tom Cruise along with Nasa and SpaceX has announced a Hollywood project, some of the other film industries are trying to beat it. And so far, Russia has taken the lead by sending Russian actress Yulia Peresild, director Klim Shipenko, and the crew to space to shoot for a movie!
On Tuesday, Yulia Peresild, Klim Shipenko, and the Russian crew were sent off to the International Space Station (ISS) to beat the Hollywood project that was announced last year by Nasa, Elon Musk’s SpaceX, and Hollywood actor Tom Cruise. The Russian actress and director took off to space from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in ex-Soviet Kazakhstan.
The Russian actress Yulia Peresild and film director Klim Shipenko took off at the expected time of 0855 GMT and their docking schedule as per reports is for 1212 GMT. Dimitry Rogozin, head of the Roscosmos space agency, took to Twitter to talk about the project and tweeted that the launch will take place as they had planned.
The Russian crew will be traveling to space in a Soyuz MS-19 spaceship led by cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov. They will be going on a 12-day mission to the ISS to shoot scenes for the movie The Challenge that will be directed by Klim Shipenko and star Yulia Peresild.

The plot of the Russian movie, The Challenge, has been kept under wraps along with the budget of the movie. But from what was revealed to Roscosmos, the plot revolves around a female surgeon allegedly played by Yulia Peresild who is sent to the ISS to save a cosmonaut. It also will have Anton Shkaplerov along with two other Russian cosmonauts’ playing cameo roles in the movie.
Yulia Peresild, Klim Shipenko, and the Russian crew will be welcomed by the ISS crew – including a French, a Japanese, and three Nasa astronauts – when the hatch opens at around 1410 GMT.
When speaking to Yulia Perresild about the first-ever movie being shot in space, the Russian actress said, “It was difficult psychologically, physically and emotionally… but I think when we reach our goal all the challenges won’t seem so bad.” She was selected for the role out of the 3,000 applicants that applied for it.

Yulia Peresild and Klim Shipenko are meant to return to Earth on the 17th of October in a capsule that will be led by cosmonaut Oleg Novitsky. Oleg Novitsky has been on the International Space Station (ISS) for the last six months. And if this movie turns out to be successful then it will not only beat the Hollywood project starring Tom Cruise but also add to the long lists of firsts for Russia’s space industry.
This movie is set to change the movie industry forever. But more than that it is a symbol of how far we as a species have developed and what all science has made possible for us. It truly will be historic to watch the Russian movie The Challenge directed by Klim Shipenko and starring Yulia Peresild. Of course, the shoot takes place smoothly and becomes a success (which I really hope it is).
