Cong protests UP incident, arrest of Priyanka Gandhi

Imphal, October 05 2021: Congress party on Tuesday organised a sit-in protest against the Lakhimpur Kheri incident, in which eight people were killed after vehicles belonging to union minister of state for home affairs Ajay Mishra's son ran over the agitating farmers, and the subsequent arrest of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi who was on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh to meet the victim farmers' families.
The protest was jointly organised by MPCC, NSUI state unit, Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress and Mahila Congress at Congress Bhawan here.
AICC Manipur in-charge Bhakta Charan Das, election observer Jairam Ramesh, MPCC president N Loken and Congress MLAs as well as party leaders attended the protest.
The protesters also carried out a rally up to the western gate of Kangla gate and continued their protest by blocking half of the road in front of Congress Bhawan.
As the protest affected normal traffic, City police OC M Sudhir and Imphal West district police tried to disperse the protesters, resulting in a brief tussle.
Interacting with the media, Bhakta Charan said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath are running anti-people and anti-farmers governments and the recent incident has shown their true colours.
In the aftermath of the Lakhimpur incident, UP police arrested several political leaders including Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi while they were on their way to meet the victim farmers at Lakhimpur, he said while demanding immediate release of the political leaders.
