Inside issue 290 of evo

It’s the question we as motoring journalists get asked the most. And it’s a question no doubt flung around constantly between readers and their friends, so when it came to the task of answering the perennial ‘what’s the best car you’ve ever driven?’, we needed to do it properly. In issue 291, we reveal the choices of evo’s staff both past and present, and we’re turning to you to reveal yours next.

Also in the new issue, Adam Towler drives the lightest Caterham yet in the form of the new Seven 170R, which weighs in as little as 440kg. This new super-lightweight version features a curious combination of elements from the Seven’s wider range, matching the stripped-out screen-less nature of the hardcore R models with the Sprint’s Suzuki-derived turbocharged triple and the narrow suspension and track-width previously specific to Japanese-market Kei car compliant models. This odd assortment of elements has combined to create a truly unique experience, and Towler finds out exactly why.

David Vivian also experiences the new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS, a model that has traditionally tread a fine line between traditional Carrera models and more focused Turbo and GT variants. Does the new GTS finally unleash the Carrera’s full potential, or does it once again lack the immersion and drama we feel the base car lacks?

Elsewhere, Dickie Meaden reunites with the very car that gave him and Skoda UK a world record on the Salt Flats of Bonneville some 15 years ago. We relive that momentous occasion, with Dickie getting back behind the wheel in some more familiar surroundings, reminiscing about the amount of blood, sweat and tears it took to hit such a milestone.

On top of these features, we also take a look into the next of our Life through a Lens series, get Peter Steven’s latest take on car design trends, check in with our columnists and fast fleet, plus reveal all the latest news and new car reviews.
