Lowdown on Brentford new boy Yoane Wissa, including how Erling Haaland copied his celebration

Yoane Wissa has made a thrilling start for Brentford, scoring five goals in his first six appearances including his equaliser in the 3-3 draw with Liverpool and the late winner against West Ham.

Before arriving in west London, the 25 year-old bagged 57 goals and had 25 assists to his name in 192 domestic appearances at Lorient, helping them win promotion from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1.

They’re the basics, here are five things you need to know about this speedy Bee.

DON’T PIGEONHOLE HIM

You already know that Yoane Wissa’s main position is forward – however he fits into other positions effortlessly.

Brentford boss, Thomas Frank has been singing Wissa’s praises since joining the club,

Frank gushed: “Wissa can play as a winger, as a No 10 and as a striker. He has that pace and power which we think is really important to be a threat in behind.

“He has good ability to take on players and create overloads and also has good pressing abilities.”

SOCIAL RISING STAR

Although Wissa is not active on Twitter which is made clear on his Instagram bio, he has still made an impact with Tweeters.

One fan admired Wissa’s journey from competing in the lower divisions of France to netting the ‘ultra-cool finish’ against Liverpool.

Whereas another fan has given him the name ‘Super Yoane’

Over on Instagram, Yoane is turning out to be a fashion icon – maybe he’ll come out with his own clothing line?

GOAL CELEBRATIONS

After the last-gasp equaliser against Liverpool, Wissa celebrated by sitting on the ground and struck a Zen pose, just like Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland.

It is also known as the Lotus pose or, in yoga, it is known as Sukhasana and is supposed to help the person performing it find their ‘Zen’.

But what many may not know is that the striker has always been celebrating the exact same way – maybe Haaland copied Wissa?

During his time at Lorient in Ligue 1, the 25-year old has kept his celebration style going and more recently after levelling with PSG, a fine solo goal saw Wissa sitting back on the pitch!

CONGOLESE HERITAGE

Born in France of Congolese descent, Wissa can speak the Lingala language.

Wissa has also been handed a chance to make his competitive debut for Democratic Republic of Congo (known as DR Congo) in next month’s 2020 World Cup qualifiers.

He said: “Playing at the 2022 World Cup will be a dream come true because it remains the ambition of every international footballer.

“To represent a nation with strong football passion is incredible. It’s always a great honour and I want to give my all to the country”.

He has been named in the Leopard’s squad for back-to-back games against Madagascar.

HORRIFIC ATTACK

In July 2021, Yoane Wissa was a victim of an acid attack after a woman approached the footballer at his home seeking an autograph before returning later that evening, and sprayed Wissa with a corrosive liquid.

The attack resulted in him being hospitalised and needing surgery on his eyes. Thankfully Wissa’s surgery went well and he had posted pictures on social media with visible scars.

He also thanked his fans for all the support.
