THANE: Less than half of the schools from Thane city were unable to cope up with the Covid safety protocols set by the administration and didn’t open up offline classes for students on Monday, a civic officials said.
Barely 237 of the 495 schools from Thane could start offline classes, a late Monday evening tally of schools made available by the education department of the Thane Municipal Corporation revealed
Rajesh Kankal, education officer at the Thane Corporation, said majority schools may not have started operations as they did not have the adequate infrastructure required to accommodate students after following the designated Covid protocol. “The requirement of bigger classrooms and adequate space between benches wasn’t feasible for many schools considering their locations and also ensuring adequate sanitization facilities wasn’t possible for many due to which they might take a little longer to open up,” he said.
The overall situation of urban parts of Thane district saw 968 of 1541 or around 62% schools opening up while rural belts saw 963 of 1131 schools welcoming students back after a long hiatus.
Meanwhile, it was an altogether different experience for students from institutions that opened up as many got nostalgic coming back to the premises. Several dignitaries from the city also made it a point to be present during this event including District Collector Rajesh Narvekar who took the inaugural lecture for class X students at Saraswati High School in Naupada while mayor Naresh Mhaske also paid visit to few city schools and addressed students.
