Paris Saint-Germain may have beaten Man City in the Champions League in midweek but when it came to Ligue 1 they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Rennes.
The French side had Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe on from the start but once they fell behind they couldn’t mount a comeback.
Rennes, Tottenham’s group rivals in the Europa Conference League, took the lead on the stroke of half-time.
A whipped cross from the left found Gaetan Laborde flying in at the far post to fire home beyonnd Gianluigi Donnarumma.
And the hosts then doubled their lead within seconds of the restart.
This time it was a move down the right and Laborde crossed to Flavian Tait, who was in acres of space in the middle of the penalty area to slam home.
Messi had hit the crossbar with a free-kick in the first half, while Mbappe had a goal disallowed by VAR with 22 minutes to go for offside.
Across the 90 minutes, manager Mauricio Pochettino’s star-studded forward line didn’t have a single shot on target, despite having 68 per cent possession and 13 strikes toward goal.
It’s likely to crank up the pressure on the Argentine, who failed to win the league title last term, despite them sitting six points clear at the top of the table after their first defeat of the campaign.
He’s already had to place peacemaker and play down reports of a falling out between Neymar and Mbappe.
The latter was reportedly appeared to complain to a teammate ‘he doesn’t give me the pass’, alluding to Neymar, during last Saturday’s win over Montpellier.
But their boss was keen to clear the air.
“They are fantastic guys. These things happen,” said Pochettino.
“There are always things between top players. They are competitors who want to win and help the team achieve good.”
A win over Man City in the Champions League did PSG the world of good but losing to Rennes in this manner won’t help matters.
