Premier and EFL players have been granted special dispensation to go on international duty to red list countries – but will only benefit from the exemption if they are fully vaccinated.

Double-jabbed players will be able to avoid the mandatory strict 10-day hotel quarantine on their return that was in place during the previous international break.

Instead they have been given permission to stay in 'bespoke quarantine facilities' for the same period, away from 'the wider public' but, crucially, be allowed to leave once a day to train and play.

The compromise and relaxed rules come following talks between football's authorities, Government and Public Health England.

Players will also have to adhere to a code of conduct that contains guidelines on transport, close contact and protocols on testing, vaccination and bubbles.

Those not fully vaccinated can still travel but at risk as they will remain subject to the previous post-trip regulations for people coming back from red list countries.

A Government spokesperson said: 'We have worked closely with football authorities to achieve an outcome that balances the interests of both club and country while maintaining the highest levels of public health and safety.

'Our best defence against the virus is vaccination and these new measures will allow fully vaccinated players to fulfill their international duties in the safest, most practical way possible, while allowing them to train and play with their clubs as early as possible upon their return.

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith, who has two players – goalkeeper Emi Martinez and midfielder Marvelous Nakamba – impacted, said: 'Both our players who will be affected are fully vaccinated as well which is a real positive for us.'

Spurs's Davinson Sanchez, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso all went on international duty during the last break and were fined having accepted their call-ups against their club's wishes.

They missed two games after the break.

Aston Villa's Martinez and Emi Buendia were given permission to go for Argentina's first two matches against Venezuela and Brazil. They were ruled out for one match while they were in quarantine.

All five players then headed to green list Croatia where they were able to train outside while they isolated as opposed to being restricted to a hotel, speeding up their ability to return to action.

In total, almost 60 players were due to travel to 26 red list countries during the September window though a number of nations reacted to the Premier League decision by opting not to call up British-based players.

Romero, Lo Celso and Martinez have all been selected in the latest Argentina squad and were already planning to accept their national team calls.

Having omitted them last time, Brazil have called up eight Premier League-based players while Colombia have included Sanchez and Everton's Yerry Mina in their latest party.
