With the calendar soon shifting to the antepenultimate month, 2021 is finally headed towards a much better conclusion than the way it began, thanks (in no small part) to the regular torrent of binge-worthy releases on OTT platforms. As expected, a bunch of horror and thriller genres are on the menu for kicking off Halloween month as films and shows like Bingo Hell, The Chestnut Man, No One Gets Out Alive and more make their way online. Bollywood sees the addition of a brand new love story, Shiddat, and a sports docu-series, Break Point, to its content library. Check out the complete list for this week’s OTT release lowdown.

1. Britney vs Spears (September 28)

Director Erin Lee Carr and journalist Jenny Eliscu combine forces to tell the story behind pop icon Britney Spears's conservatorship, which saw her father gain control over her person and estate in 2008. This documentary film showcases investigative work, exclusive interviews to paint a precise picture of the pop star's pursuit of freedom from her family and legal restrictions. The duo also aims to shed light on her complicated 13-year conservatorship history by publicising a series of shocking behind-the-scenes events.

2. The Chestnut Man (September 29)

A tranquil suburb in Copenhagen goes into panic mode when a woman is found brutally murdered in a playground with one hand missing. The spot of the incident is marked by a tiny stick figure made of chestnuts, hinting at the work of a deranged serial killer. Detectives Naia Thulin and Mark Hess get on the case and discover vital evidence that connects the chestnut man to the disappearance of another victim. This Nordic-noir series has been adapted from the eponymous novel by Søren Sveistrup.

3. Sounds Like Love (September 29)

Coping with a devastating breakup, fashion assistant Maca turns to her best friends Jimena and Adriana for support. However, she soon realises the importance of coming to terms with her demons and sets out to take back control of her life.

4. No One Gets Out Alive (September 29)

After spending years in Mexico, tending to her terminally ill mother, Ambar finally moves to America to live a better life. She sneaks into the country illegally and takes up a cash-in-hand job that eventually allows her to rent a shoddy room in a forsaken boarding house. Ambar soon begins to experience hellish nightmares and hears a strange clattering sound in the basement. Her fear is compounded when she realises that her new home is a gateway to horrors that won’t let anyone leave.

5. Bingo Hell (October 1)

The first title in the Welcome to the Blumhouse horror anthology series, this film is set in Oak Springs, Arizona, where a resilient group of aged people does everything in its power to reject gentrification. Their head, Lupita, is the glue that binds them together as a community and a family. Unfortunately, the beloved Bingo Hall is sold to a powerful businessman, infuriating the locals. When Lupita leads a protest against this, her neighbours start turning up dead under mysterious circumstances, making her realise that something sinister is at play.

6. Black As Night (October 1)

Another entry into the Welcome to the Blumhouse anthology, Black As Night follows 15-year-old Shawna whose mother is killed by vampires that prey on the downtrodden in New Orleans. Desperate to even the score, she teams up with three friends, and the group sets out to eliminate the fanged menace in their city. In a twist of events, they find themselves entangled in a centuries-old battle between rival vampire factions, battling to assert control over the city limits.

7. Break Point (October 1)

This sports docu-series tracks the unbelievable journeys of Indian tennis maestros Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi. From their meteoric victory at Wimbledon in 1999 to their shocking and unexpected disagreements that led to a bitter split, directors Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and Nitish Tiwari paint a candid picture of the sports duo's successes, struggles and contributions to Indian tennis.

8. Maid (October 1)

Shown from the perspective of a desperate, yet fierce woman, Maid follows the hardships of Alex, who takes up house cleaning jobs to try and make ends meet. Her motivation comes from the need to escape an abusive relationship and potential homelessness, and also give her daughter, Maddy, a better life. The series is based on the New York Times best-selling memoir—Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive by Stephanie Land.

9. Shiddat (October 1)

Driving home the power of love and the lengths one is willing to go for it, Shiddat follows parallel narratives about the lives of two couples. Their stories aren't perfect and their paths are flawed, yet, they choose to stay true to the love they feel for their partner. The film tries to encapsulate their willingness to set aside logical reasoning and go the distance to make their relationships work. The film stars Sunny Kaushal, Radhika Madan, Mohit Raina and Diana Penty.

10. The Guilty (October 1)

A 911 operator, Joe Baylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) is having a quiet day at work when he receives a phone call from a woman who has been abducted. She manages to reveal the colour and type of vehicle she's in, but is forced to disconnect the call when the kidnapper gets suspicious. Joe does his best to assist her and gets the police involved. However, as the events unfold, he realises that the whole incident is a much bigger deal than he had initially imagined.
