New Delhi: An officer of the Indian Air Force (IAF) was arrested in Coimbatore in the early hours of Sunday for allegedly raping a colleague.
According to India Today, the arrested officer is a 29-year-old Lieutenant from Chhattisgarh who was at the Coimbatore Airforce College for training. An NDTV report said that the alleged sexual assault took place “ten days ago”.
In its report, The Hindu said that the complainant lodged her complaint with the All Women Police Station in Coimbatore central. The accused officer was arrested for an offence under Section 376 (punishment for rape) of the Indian Penal Code in the early hours of Sunday, the newspaper said.
According to India Today, the accused was produced before a magistrate on Sunday morning and sent to Udumalaipet sub-jail for a day. The lawyer of the accused filed an affidavit that Coimbatore Police cannot arrest an Air Force officer, while the police sought time to file a counter-affidavit.
