A mum has shared why you never need to buy rinse aid for your dishwasher again, as all you need is a few drops of white vinegar for sparkling dishes.

Carolina McCauley, from Perth, shared a TikTok video showing herself adding half a cup of basic vinegar to the rinse aid compartment of her dishwasher.

After washing her plates, bowls and cutlery as per usual, the mum-of-two opened her machine to find her shiny cutlery and crockery.

'Did you know that you can use vinegar as a rinse aid for your dishwasher and your dishes will actually be cleaner?' Carolina posted on TikTok.

White vinegar is an effective and frugal substitute for rinse aid because it doesn't leave any water spots on cups and glasses and it doesn't use any harsh chemicals in the process.

Alongside this, vinegar also works to clean and disinfect your dishwasher at the same time, thanks to its composition.

While many were impressed with the trick and said they had never heard of it before, others warned of putting vinegar inside the rinse aid compartment of your machine.

'White vinegar really messes with your washing machine and dishwasher,' one commenter posted.

This is down to the fact that vinegar is acidic and can attack the rubber components of the dispenser, causing a failure over time.

Others suggested that if you want to try the dishwasher trick without ruining your machine, you're better off placing a bowl of white vinegar at the top of your dishwasher where you store your cups and glasses.

That way, it doesn't come into direct contact with the rubber of your machine.

Another asked whether using vinegar leaves a nasty smell behind, to which Carolina responded and said it doesn't 'at all' - and actually works to clean your dishwasher at the same time.

Previously, Carolina shared another video of herself rolling a sheet of foil into a ball before dropping it into the cutlery basket inside her dishwasher.

After washing her dishes and cutleries as per usual, the mum-of-two opened the dishwasher to find her shiny silverware.

The cleaning method works so efficiently because of a chemical reaction between the aluminium foil and the dishwasher tablet, which breaks down all of the dirt.

The aluminum foil reacts with the dissolving dishwashing tablet.

According to Australia's property maintenance company Fantastic Services, foil doesn't have any cleaning properties but the aluminium works well on shining utensils and even oven racks.
