Emma Raducanu lists Michael Jordan among dream dinner party guests, loves Formula One, talented at many sports and could become a billionaire after US Open win

Emma Raducanu was catapulted into a global star this month after her incredibly grand slam victory at the US Open.

The 18-year-old ended a 44-year wait for a British female champion and did it in the most unlikely of circumstances.

It was just her fourth ever WTA event and came through qualifying to win the whole thing at Flushing Meadows, the first time that has ever happened.

It has been a whirlwind fortnight for the Bromley teenager since she claimed the trophy.

There have been A-list parties and wall-to-wall interviews, but she is now back in training focusing on her next tournament.

And we have learnt a lot about the tennis sensation in the last month who seems one of the most likeable sportstars around.

Her dream dinner party

In a clip the LTA posted on YouTube, Raducanu answered quick fire questions and one was about which three people she would invite to a dream dinner party.

“I’d say Daniel Ricciardo,” she said in the video.

“He seems like a really funny guy.

“I’m quite into F1 so that’s exciting. I’d just love to hear more about it.”

She added: “Michael Jordan, just so much insight.

“Yeah I’d to hear some stories of his and how it was going because I watched ‘The Last Dance’ and I think everyone did and I was so inspired after that.”

Raducanu then named radio host Tom Keene as her third dinner guest.

Her love of Formula 1

Raducanu is a huge F1 fan and she attended the British Grand Prix earlier this year.

She got the chance to meet Lewis Hamilton at the Met Gala after her US Open victory and loved speaking to him, even though her favourite driver is Ricciardo.

“I managed to go to some really cool events and places,” she told BBC Breakfast.

“At the Met Gala I spoke to Lewis Hamilton, which was really cool being such a fan of motorsport and Formula One. It was really nice to see him and speak to him there.

“It was an artistic event with some great performances, and I was very honoured and grateful to have been able to go.”

Multi-talented

She is not only brilliant at tennis, but she played a multitude of sports as a youngster before focusing on it full-time as a teenager.

Among the sports she tried out were golf, ballet, horse riding, skiing, basketball, table tennis and even go-karting.

“I was initially in ballet, then my dad hijacked me from ballet and threw me into every sport you could imagine,” Raducanu explained this year.

“I was doing horse riding, swimming, tap dancing, basketball, skiing, golf and, from the age of five to eight, I was go-karting.

“I started my very short go-karting career in a bus garage in Streatham before going to a proper track. From the age of nine I started motocross in a forest somewhere for a year. This was all alongside tennis.”

Not only is she gifted at sport, but also excelled academically and achieved an A-star and an A in maths and economics, respectively, in her A-levels this summer.

Raducanu can also speak fluent Mandarin, with her mother coming from Shenyang, and has already attracted a huge following in China.

All she wanted was AirPods

Her prize money for winning the US Open was around £1.8million, an incredible sum for an 18-year-old to receive, and richly deserved for her efforts.

While plenty of teenagers would dream about what lavish house or car they would buy, Raducanu joked that all she wanted was some new AirPods.

“There’s a running joke on my team because at my first-round qualifying match I lost my AirPods, and I was basically running around the training room for like three minutes before my call to go on trying to find it,” Raducanu said to ESPN during the tournament.

“But, I lost it and I was thinking to myself, ‘you know what if you win this match, you can buy yourself a pair of AirPods.’”

She did later say she would let her parents sort out her finances, while sensibly acknowledging that tennis was an expensive sport to play.

No courts to train on?

She has just won the US Open and all eyes are on where she will be playing next.

Raducanu is weighing-up whether to play at Indian Wells, where a wildcard might be on its way, while she has also entered the Kremlin Cup next month.

The 18-year-old had a week off before getting back to training, but being a grand slam winner does not afford you special dispensation when it comes to booking a tennis court.

She had struggled to find somewhere in her home town of Bromley to get out and play.

“Honestly, I can’t even get a court at my local club. I’m pretty sure nothing changes,” she told Sky News.

New face of Tiffany

Raducanu has a bright future ahead of her and some industry experts believe she could become the first billionaire British sportsperson.

She obviously has a long way to go before achieving that, but companies and brands are clamouring to get involved with the superstar.

The first endorsement of her post-US Open victory has already come and she was recently announced as the new face of Tiffany.

Many more are likely to follow in the future as she continues her trajectory as a global sports star.
