Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it took another 12 months before the champion was able to get back in the ring.

When he finally did so, he put on another spectacular performance to knock out his challenger and retain the WBA, IBF and WBO belts.

In an unexpected twist, Floyd Mayweather turned up at the event.

Nobody knew that the retired 50-0 pound-for-pound star was even in the country until he posted an Instagram story announcing that he would be in attendance.

He arrived, watched the fight and congratulated Joshua in his dressing room afterwards.

When watching the fight back, AJ pointed out a particular moment during a break in the action where he lifted his arm to salute a particular person in the crown.

Joshua explained to JD Sports: “When I put my hand up there I could hear Mayweather, ‘Jab, jab champ.’

“That’s when I kind of acknowledged him.”

AJ previously said on his own YouTube documentary: “It was the first time we were allowed fans back in stadiums and Mayweather was in the stadium.

“It’s an honour to have him in the house, I respect him highly for what he’s achieved.

“He came to see me perform and I pulled out one of his favourite moves which is the pull counter.

“If you watch boxing, you’ll know that’s one of Mayweather’s signature moves.

“Having him in the house was an honour and I felt I had to give him a little something to remember.”
