Violence amongst supporters in France continued as Marseille and Angers’ match in Ligue 1 is overshadowed by trouble in the stands.
Sadly for the French top flight, it isn’t the first time it has happened this season as unsociable behaviour from fans dominated headlines after a match between the former Champions League winners and Nice.
This time, towards the end of Wednesday’s 0-0 draw at Angers, Marseille supporters spilled onto the pitch after a brawl with the home crowd.
Angers fans reportedly set off firecrackers towards the away end of the stadium during the match.
That certainly lit the fuse between the rivals, with Marseille fans retaliating before storming the pitch.
Calls from the stadium speaker system asking for fans to remain calm came to no avail as the altercation marred the match.
They were the latest violent scenes involving Marseille, although their clashes with Nice back in August were sparked by a Nice fan who threw a bottle that hit one of their star players, Dimitri Payet.
The former West Ham man was struck on the head, with the player then throwing it back from where it came from, which started the chaos.
Nice fans broke onto the pitch in retaliation and even began fighting with Merseille players.
The scenes were so severe, riot police were called on to the pitch as the match was suspended.
Montpellier vs Marseille was also halted in the opening round of fixtures this season, with Marseille sub Valentin Rongier struck in the face by a bottle.
Following the Nice game, the president of Marseille, Pablo Longoria said: “We need to set precedents for French football.”
And yet clearly little progression has been made in their control of fans, as Marseille and Angers supporters marred yet another game in Ligue 1.
