Milan, Italy
Italian scooter maker Piaggio announced that it had set up a consortium with Honda Motor Co., KTM AG and Yamaha Motor Co. The consortium would encourage using swappable batteries for electric motorcycles and light electric vehicles (EVs).
A joint statement by the four companies mentioned that the consortium was named the Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium (SBMC). It aims to broaden the use of light electric vehicles, such as scooters, mopeds and motorcycles. It would also support the sustainable management of batteries in light electric vehicles.
The consortium would also focus on issues such as battery life, recharging times, infrastructure and costs. It would work on defining international standard technical specifications for swappable batteries.
The four companies stated that they were open to welcoming other companies to join them in this consortium and look to include and work with many more brands.
A Letter of Intent to form a consortium was signed on March 01, 2021. The official agreement for the creation of the SBMC was finalised by Yoshishige Nomura, Managing Officer, Chief Officer, Motorcycle Operations, Honda Motor Co., Ltd., Stefan Pierer, CEO, PIERER Mobility AG, Michele Colaninno, Chief of Strategy and Product, Piaggio Group and Takuya Kinoshita, Senior Executive Officer, Chief General Manager of Land Mobility Business Operations, Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.
