Volkswagen India has expressed its support for a tax cut on electric vehicle (EV) imports, same as Tesla. The companies feel that reduced tariffs would help the EV industry.

Gurpratap Boparai, Managing Director, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd, said that a duty cut on EVs to 25% from the current levels wouldn’t pose threats. It would help drive investment and speed up the creation of an ecosystem.

He added that high tax rates affect India’s potential to become a global manufacturing destination. Reducing import tariffs on EVs and components will help boost the local production of EVs.

Volkswagen is exploring ways to introduce EVs across its brands in India. Boparai added that India needs fast-charging infrastructure and incentives to transition to EVs.

Earlier, Tesla urged the Indian government to reduce the high taxes on EV imports. Elon Musk, CEO, Tesla, tweeted that Tesla will “quite likely” build a factory in India if it first begins selling imported vehicles.
