West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has supported the political parties who have demanded a caste based census. Banerjee has said that if all political parties come to a consensus on the issue of caste census, then she has no problem with it and that she will also accept the nationwide caste census.
The West Bengal Chief Minister on Monday said she will not object the caste based census if all political parties and all states reach a consensus on the issue. So let all the political parties, all the state governments and the central government make a decision and build a consensus.
The Trinamool Chief’s statement came after the meeting between a delegation of 10 political parties led by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Modi on the issue of caste census. Responding to this meeting, She said that the issues and sentiments of all the states are different. Nitish ji has put his own questions regarding this issue, now let’s see how other people react on this.
Significantly, on Monday, leaders of all political parties of Bihar under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met Prime Minister Modi. During the meeting, all the leaders demanded the conduct of caste census. The first caste census was conducted in the country in 1931, under British rule, when Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha were one entity. After that the caste census happened in 2011 also but its report was not made public. The government had refused to make the report public, citing several shortcomings.
Meanwhile, the Bengal Chief Minister also demanded early by-polls to the vacant assembly seats in the state. Banerjee said that Corona is under control in West Bengal, so the Election Commission should hold by-elections immediately. At present there are 7 vacant assembly seats in West Bengal on which elections are to be held.
