The Western Cape transport department has urged parents to check the operating licences of scholar transport after it emerged that the driver of the taxi which crashed outside Parliament was allegedly unlicensed.
Western Cape Transport MEC Daylin Mitchell said the 16-seater taxi was transporting 20 pupils and two adults when it crashed into one of the steel bollards outside Parliament on Friday morning.
Some of the pupils are still in hospital.
"It was shocking to learn that the driver did not have a driver's or operating licence and that the minibus was also unlicensed," Mitchell said on Monday.
He said:
A number of pupils were injured on Friday morning when the taxi crashed into the bollards at around 07:00, leaving 11 of them and the minibus driver with serious injuries.
Police spokesperson Colonel André Traut said a case of reckless and negligent driving was registered for investigation.
