Waterlogging woes: Kejriwal says changes to be made to Delhi's drainage system

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said changes will be made to Delhi's drainage system based on suggestions received from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to resolve the issue of waterlogging in the city. The decision was taken at a meeting held to review the national capital's drainage master plan. The meeting was chaired by Kejriwal, according to the Chief Minister's Office (CMO). Delhi has witnessed massive waterlogging this monsoon season. Many arterial stretches, underpasses and even residential areas were inundated after heavy rains in the city.

18-year-old shot dead at southwest Delhi restaurant

An 18-year-old service boy at a restaurant in southwest Delhi's Chhawla area was shot dead by two people, police said on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Aman, alias Gulam Sabir, of JJ colony, Bawana, they said. The Chhawla police station was informed around 7 pm on Monday about two people opening fire at a person inside a restaurant, Heaven On Earth, located on Khaira Road, a senior officer said. The accused had come to the restaurant as customers and were sitting inside after placing their order, he said.

DUTA holds protest against implementation of new education policy

The Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) on Tuesday held a protest against the implementation of the New Education Policy in the varsity. They protested outside the vice-chancellor's office where the Academic Council meeting was underway to discuss the implementation of the policy. The Standing Committee on Academic Matters, in its meeting held on Monday, approved the implementation of the policy from 2022-23, the four-year undergraduate programme and multiple entry and exit options for students.

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday asked authorities concerned to decide the representation seeking to extend the ex-gratia assistance to the family members of Indian citizens who died abroad due to Covid-19, as per law. A Division Bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh's direction came while hearing the plea filed by Pravasi legal Cell, a trust, through Advocate M.P. Srivignesh. The Pravasi legal Cell has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking direction to the Indian Missions abroad to collect and maintain proper data of those Indian citizens who died abroad due to Covid-19 and also to include the children who have lost both parents or surviving parent or legal guardian/adoptive parents due to Covid-19 abroad but who are Indian Citizens under the 'PM-CARES for Children scheme'.

Minimum temperature rises in national capital New Delhi

The minimum temperature rose by a few notches in the national capital on Tuesday to settle at 29.8 degrees Celsius, officials said. The relative humidity in the morning was recorded at 89 per cent, according to the India Meteorological Department. The minimum temperature on Monday had settled at 26.2 degrees Celsius, while the maximum was recorded at 35.2 degrees Celsius.

Delhi High Court on Monday asked Delhi Police to place before it the latest status of cases relating to northeast Delhi riots of 2020 pending before trial courts. “How many cases have been filed? How many chargesheet filed, charges framed, what is the number of witnesses examined, give us all the details,” a bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh said while asking the police to file these details before the next date of hearing on October 8.

SC issues notice to NHAI over ‘illegal construction’ of Dwarka e-way flyover

Construction of the Dwarka Expressway flyover in Dwarka’s Sector 22-23 has come under judicial scanner with the Supreme Court on Monday agreeing to hear resident associations’ plea alleging that the highways authority was “illegally” building the flyover without obtaining mandatory clearance from the authorities concerned. A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and M R Shah granted an early hearing and listed it for Friday after advocate Anand Varma, who filed the petition on behalf of two group housing societies, alleged that full-fledged construction is going on and irreversible damage to the environment would be done if it is not stayed. The court issued notice to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) seeking its response.

Covid care centre at IGI by next month

A dedicated Covid care centre is expected to become operational at IGI Airport early next month, with a Memorandum of Understanding signed by airport operator Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) and Medanta Hospital. The facility, to be set up at Terminal 2 of the airport, will consist of 15 paediatric high dependency unit (HDU) beds, 18 adult HDU beds and 52 isolation wards, officials claimed. The care centre will initially be available to airport staff and their family members, with passengers to be admitted in emergency cases.

Delhi-Jaipur flyover shut for wall repair

A flyover running parallel to an elevated portion of Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway near IFFCO Chowk had to be closed for traffic after one end of the concrete structure holding it collapsed on Monday. The underground sewer line, which is more than 20 years old and was anyway slated for repairs, running below the flyover, burst because of gases trapped inside it and increased flow of water from the recent rain. As the pipe burst, the soil gave away and exposed the sewer line. The retaining wall of the flyover, which holds one end of the structure and is around 7 metres high, too, collapsed under the impact.

Rain prompts 3 civic bodies to step up anti-dengue drive

The recent heavy rain and reports of increase in cases of vector-borne diseases has forced the civic bodies to increase the frequency of fumigation drives in open sites, parks and public places where chances of waterlogging are high. A South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) official said that usually fumigation was repeated after seven days, but at certain sites workers had been directed to visit after 4-5 days.
