Chef de Mission Gursharan Singh announced on sunday that the indian team at the tokyo Paralympics' opening ceremony will consist of 11 members - six officials and five competitors.

Flag bearer Mariyappan Thangavelu, discus thrower Vinod Kumar, javelin thrower Tek Chand, and powerlifters Jaideep and Sakina Khatun are among the five athletes expected to take part in the opening ceremony.

The Chef de Mission, Deputy Chef de Mission Arhan Bagati, COVID-19 Chief Liaison Officer V.K.Dabas, and Mr Mariyappan's coach and para-athletics Chairperson Satyanarayana are among the six authorities who will take part in the opening ceremony.

There is no limit on the number of competitors who can compete in the opening ceremony, but only seven indian athletes have arrived in tokyo so far, according to Chef de Mission Singh, who is also the Secretary-General of the indian Paralympic Committee. Sonal patel and Bhavina patel, two table tennis players, are participating on august 25 and will miss the opening ceremony, which will be held by Japanese Emperor Naruhito.

During the tokyo Olympics, which ended on august 8, the same guideline of having a maximum of six officials during the opening ceremony was followed. The third group of indian athletes will go on Monday, although they will be subjected to quarantine before being allowed to practise.

This year, india is represented by 54 athletes, the most ever. Fans have been prohibited from the Paralympics, as they have been from the previous Olympic Games, due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Tokyo.
