The Indian auto
industry voluntarily recalled 376,536 vehicles till August 11, 2021, compared
with 380,615 units in the whole of 2020. This number is double the recall rate
in 2019, which saw 159,992 recalls.
The data comes
from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM),
which maintains a database on voluntary recall information by automakers since
2012.
The increase in
recall rates has been attributed to manufacturers getting proactive towards
consumer safety and striving to meet government safety norms.
The Indian auto
industry’s highest recall was in 2015 with 1,000,467 units and 932,449 in 2016
due to technical issues faced by General Motors India and Honda Cars India.
Hyundai Motor
India, Mahindra & Mahindra and Toyota Kirloskar Motor recalled vehicles
mainly due to malfunctioning fuel pumps, airbags, incorrect fitment of parts,
critical braking issues and any quality checks that may have escaped at
vendors.
Mahindra &
Mahindra recalled 29,878 units of Bolero pickup, 531 units of Scorpio M Hawk
and 2,649 units of Thar. Hyundai Motor India recalled 530 units of Kona
electric vehicles. Toyota Kirloskar Motor units of recalled 9,498 SUV Urban
Cruiser.
Maruti Suzuki
India did not have any recalls this year. Similarly, Tata Motors has not
initiated any recall over the past 24 months.
