Premier League match preview: Arsenal v Chelsea

Stan and Josh Kroenke have promised more signings at Arsenal as the American owners delivered a message to fans ahead of their first home match of the Premier League season.

The Gunners have already spent a total of £132million on transfers this summer, including the arrival of Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale on Friday.

But the north London club are planning to bring in more reinforcements as the Kroenke’s delivered a message to supporters which will be printed in the pre-match programme of Sunday’s clash with Chelsea.

The statement read: “We know there is much work ahead to get back to where we need to be but are confident about what can be achieved by this great club and our people.

“We are building a squad, rich in young talent, much of it developed through our wonderful academy.

How many signings will Arsenal make before the transfer window shuts? Comment below

“It is clear looking across Europe that we are dealing with a difficult transfer market due to the impacts of the pandemic but at the time of writing, are delighted to have signed Nuno Tavares, Sambi Lokonga and Ben White.

“We have also renewed the deals of Kieran Tierney and Emile Smith Rowe, both on a long-term basis.

“These are all young players that we are convinced can develop further and have a bright future with us.

“They are supported by a strong group of more experienced players including Granit Xhaka, who has signed an extended contract. This is an important step in terms of maintaining balance and stability in the squad.

“In the meantime, the transfer negotiating team has been working hard behind the scenes to improve the squad further.

“Everyone at Arsenal is emerging from the pandemic determined to drive our club forward.

“Yes, there are many challenges ahead, but with your support and encouragement, we are confident we will return to competing for and winning the game’s biggest trophies.”

Here are four potential players who could arrive at Arsenal before the window shuts.

Houssem Aouar

The Lyon midfielder has been continually linked with a move to the Emirates and his name is unlikely to go away from now until Deadline Day.

Arsenal narrowly missed out on a move for the playmaker last summer as their £32m offer was knocked back as the French side valued their prized asset at £55m.

But it might have worked out for them as he is available at a much cheaper price this time around.

It would take a bid of £25m to purchase Aouar and there are even reports a loan move could materialise if an obligation to buy is inserted into the deal.

James Maddison

Talk of James Maddison joining Arsenal has cooled somewhat in recent weeks, especially with the arrival of Odegaard, but the interest is still there.

Leicester ‘s asking price of £60m is still a huge obstacle to overcome, but if the Gunners can offload a string of players within the next week, never say never.

The Foxes are not interested in a part-exchange deal, but Mikel Arteta’s men will continue to ask the question.

One thing on Arsenal’s side is that Maddison is reportedly open to a switch to the Emirates which could help tip the scales in their favour.

Marco Asensio

Arsenal are looking to negotiate with Real Madrid once again after completing a move for Odegaard as they target Marco Asensio.

The Spaniard’s future is up in the air and reports in Spain claim that he is available if a suitable offer comes the La Liga side’s way.

Fichajes claims Arteta’s men have ‘made contact’ with the Bernabeu club who feel talks should begin at around the £35m mark.

Madrid are not actively trying to sell Asensio, but it seems like they are willing to entertain offers for their midfielder.

Corentin Tolisso

The Bayern Munich man is the latest name to enter the mix as it’s believed that Arsenal are interested in landing the Frenchman, according to the Sunday Express.

Bild are reporting that the German side have put him for sale in an attempt to raise cash before the window closes.

The Gunners face competition from city rivals Tottenham who offered Tanguy Ndombele for him in a swap deal last week.

That proposition was knocked back as Munich look for a cash-only deal, which has brought Arsenal back into the equation.
