Assam: Medic, constable, maulanas among 15 arrested for supporting Taliban on social media

Special director general of Assam Police GP Singh said they found 18 profiles, which have posted messages on social media in support of the Taliban, in the last few days.
GUWAHATI: A student of Tezpur Medical College, a constable and three maulanas were among 15 people arrested by Assam Police from across 11 districts on Friday night for allegedly posting social media messages in support of the Taliban’s Afghan takeover.
Special director general of Assam Police GP Singh said they found 18 such profiles, which have posted messages on the social media in support of the Taliban, in the last few days. “After an analysis of their social media posts, we have booked them under UAPA.”
Among them are third-year medical student Nadim Akhtar(23), who was arrested from his home in Hailakandi, a constable from the 21st battalion of Assam Police and senior Jamiat leader Maulana Fazul Karim (49) who was nabbed in Darrang district, Singh said.
The other arrested persons have been identified as Abu Bakkar Siddique and Saidul Haque from Kamrup, Jawed Mazumder from Cachar, Mozidul Islam and Faruk Hussain Khan from Barpeta, Saiyad Ahmed and Arman Hussain from Dhubri, Khandakar Nur Alom from South Salmara, Maulana Yaseen Khan from Goalpara, Maulana Basiruddin Laskar from Hojai, Mujib Uddin and Mortuza Hussain Khan from Karimganj.
The police were not able to arrest the remaining three profile owners who posted similar sentiments on Facebook as they are based in Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Mumbai.
