JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir political leaders have welcomed the joint statement of 19 opposition parties of the country demanding restoration of full statehood of the Union territory and early assembly election in a free and fair manner. The 19 opposition parties held a meeting hosted by Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday when the joint statement was issued. On Saturday, senior Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee leaders, including vice-presidents, the chief spokesperson, general secretaries, secretaries, heads of frontal wings of the party and district presidents, expressed their gratitude to the leadership of all 19 opposition parties for extending full support to the “justified demands of the people of Jammu and Kashmir”, and sending a strong message to the Centre.Jammu and Kashmir Congress leaders said all opposition parties have been realising the “pain and sufferings of the people... who have been deprived of their genuine rights, status, dignity and identity”, but the BJP government at the Centre is unnecessarily delaying the restoration of its statehood."The people of Jammu and Kashmir are getting restless now, as the BJP is unsympathetic and unreasonable in not responding to the popular demand for restoration of statehood,” a state Congress leader said. They impressed upon the Centre not to further delay the restoration of full statehood before holding assembly elections at the earliest. They demanded that the ongoing exercise of delimitation of assembly constituencies be completed without delay. National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, Congress state president Ghulam Ahmad Mir, CPM general secretary MY Tarigami, Peoples Conference chairman Sajad Gani Lone and Awami National Conference vice-president Muzuffar Shah also joined the Congress in the statement issued on Saturday.A year ago as well on August 20, Kashmir leaders had resolved to fight for the restoration of Article 370 and full statehood.
