Taliban form three-member panel to address media's concerns

Kabul, Aug 21 (UNI) The Taliban on Saturday announced a three-member committee to “reassure the media and address their concerns” in Kabul, after it faced flak over reports of its men hunting down and killing Afghans working with foreign media, and women being barred from resuming their jobs in television.
“A tripartite committee was set up in Kabul to reassure the media and address their concerns. It will be attended by a competent member of the Cultural Commission of the Islamic Emirate, the Deputy Chairman of the Media Defense Association and a competent representative of the Kabul Police Headquarters. They will work together to address media issues,” Zabihullah Mujahid, the group’s spokesperson tweeted.
According to social media, a reporter for the daily Al-Ittihad al-Rooz was interrogated by the Taliban in Kabul for not wearing Afghan clothes. Two days ago, there were reports of a person being flogged in Kabul for not wearing Afghan clothes.
Earlier, the Committee to Protect Journalists in a statement on Thursday had said the Taliban must immediately cease harassing and attacking journalists for their work, allow women journalists to broadcast the news, and permit the media to operate freely and independently. It cited several instances of harassment and physical harm being caused to media persons.
The Indian Women’s Press Corps (IWPC) in a statement strongly condemned the targeted killing of journalists and their relatives in Afghanistan by the Taliban and has called upon the international community to make every effort “to stop this barbarity”.
