Police have launched a probe after finding the parents of a young girl who was found alone clutching her Nintendo in a park in Merseyside.

The young girl, believed to be around ten years old, was found by a member of the public in the playground at Gaskell Park, St Helens, at around 8.40am on Saturday.

She was taken to hospital to be checked over and 'appears to be in good health', Merseyside police confirmed.

Police launched a desperate search to track down her family and confirm her identity and went door-to-door in the area.

The force have since confirmed that her family have been found and enquires are ongoing to confirm the circumstances.

A tweet read: 'Good news. Massive thanks to all those who shared and commented on our appeal to identify the girl who was found in #StHelens earlier. 

'Her family have now been found and enquiries ongoing to confirm the circumstances.'

The youngster was described as white, around ten years old, with brown hair and wearing a blue top and black shorts.

She was also carrying a Nintendo Switch under the account of 'Fragger' when she was found on Saturday morning. 

Sergeant Paul Allen previously said: 'Although the girl appears to be in good health, we're obviously desperate to find her family, so if you recognise her from the description or have any information, call 999 immediately with reference 323 and we will do the rest.'
