Onam is one of the big and important festivals for all Malayalis across the country. The festival is celebrated on a big scale across the the nation but specially in Kerala, the southernmost state of India.
According to the Malayalam calendar, people celebrates this festival in the month of Chingam, the day of Thiruvonam Nakshatram(Shravana asterism). In 2021, Onam will be celebrated on August 21.
The festival celebration continues for atleast 10 days, where people make flower rangolis at their porch, do traditional folk dances such as Thiruvathira, Kathakali, and Pulikali the tiger dance. The Onam Sadya, a feast consisting of nine or more vegetarian dishes served on a banana leaf, is also an indispensable part of the festival. But this year, the popular boat race Vallamkali is restricted due to Covid pandemic outbreak.
