The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has termed the prolonged non-cleaning of solid waste sites as a serious problem. The NGT said the time has come to clean such sites and dispose of the collected solid waste in a scientific manner.

A bench of NGT Chairperson Adarsh Kumar Goel said, "There is a possibility of spreading air, water, and land pollution due to long-standing garbage at most places. This may affect public health. The bench was hearing a petition alleging illegal dumping of solid waste in Adampur village of tehsil Vadim in Rajasthan's Dholpur district.

The NGT, in its August 17 order, said it is necessary to ascertain the latest status of compliance in Rajasthan and if the steps taken in respect of solid waste lying for a long time at Dholpur's Bari are considered successful, the state may move to other places. Might consider repeating this model.

"The status of such compliance needs to be compiled at the state level by a joint committee of Secretary, Urban Development Department Rajasthan, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and State PCB in coordination with the concerned local bodies and district magistrates," the bench said.

The Joint Committee may convene its first meeting within 15 days to take stock of the ground situation and prepare a plan for further course of action to compile the data in accordance with the directions of this Tribunal on the subject.
