Abdullah holds talks with key Haqqani group leader

Kabul, Aug 19 (UNI) Abdullah Abdullah, chairman of the Supreme National Reconciliation Council, met with Khalil al-Rahman Haqqani, a key member of the Haqqani Network, and his entourage in Kabul and discussed the security of citizens in Afghanistan and “cooperation for the future of the country”.

"The two sides exchanged views on the security of citizens in Kabul and across Afghanistan, unity and cooperation for the future of the country,” said Abdullah in a series of tweets.

Abdullah, while welcoming the leaders of the Taliban at his residence, asked them to pay attention and prioritize the security and protection of the life, property and dignity of the people.

“Referring to the concerns of the citizens of Kabul and other provinces, he emphasised that the collective security of the people, protecting their life and property should be our main priority.”

He also reiterated his official position that he supports an independent and unified Afghanistan based on justice and fairness.

He added: “history shows that in the absence of social justice, providing security and strengthening national unity is impossible.”

According to Abdullah, Haqqani assured the participants that they will "work hard to provide the right security for the citizens of Kabul, and asked for the help and support of political leaders and elders of the country to provide security for the people.”

Significantly, in 2014, the US had offered $5 million for information on Khalil al-Rahman Haqqani.

In August 2014, the US had offered $30 million in return for information on key leaders of the Haqqani network, blamed for numerous attacks in Afghanistan.

The US State Department had offered $5 million each for information leading to the location of Aziz Haqqani, Khalil al-Rahman Haqqani, Yahya Haqqani, and Abdul Rauf Zakir.

It increased its reward offer from $5million to $10 million for information on the group’s leader, Sirajuddin Haqqani.

The State Department had said then that the group is allied with Al-Qaeda and the Afghan Taliban “and cooperates with other terrorist organisations in the region”.

It described the Pakistan-based Haqqani network as “the most lethal insurgent group” targeting the US-led NATO coalition and Afghan personnel in Afghanistan.

The Taliban have taken over Afghanistan, and declared it as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, where they will impose the Sharia law.
