While thousands of desperate Afghans struggled to flee Afghanistan, recent reports suggested that Taliban militants are making it difficult for them to reach the airport. One viral video showed an Afghan-American couple arguing with US personnel to let them in as they described their ordeal of reaching the airport and struggling through the crowd,

The Kabul airport is under the control of US troops, but the streets leading to the airport are being patrolled by the Taliban.

President Biden, in an interview, assured the US troops will stay in Afghanistan for as long as it takes to evacuate all US citizens, even if it means extending the deadline.

“If there’s American citizens left, we’re gonna stay to get them all out,” said Mr Biden.

The Home Office’s newly-announced Afghan resettlement scheme has been branded “confusing” and “deeply disingenuous” by organisations that facilitate such movement.

Despite Boris Johnson describing Britain’s offer to take in some 5,000 Afghans this year as “one of the most generous … in our country’s history”, the UNHCR, which aids refugee resettlement globally, told The Independent it would not be possible to resettle people from within Afghanistan.
