Speaking to Total Film, James shared where he is drawing inspiration from for the movie.

"Aquaman 2 is very heavily inspired by Planet of the Vampires. You can take the boy out of horror, but you can never take the horror out [of] the boy."

The 1965 Italian horror film directed by Mario Bava follows the experiences of two crew members of two spaceships who survived when they crash-landed on an unexplored planet. The dead crew members stalk and kill the remaining survivors.
