UGC grants recognition to Kalahandi University

BHUBANESWAR: The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday granted recognition to the Kalahandi University, Bhawanipatna and included the institution in its list of universities.

Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced this on twitter by posting the UGC letter to the university. “Kalahandi MP Basanta Panda had informed me about the need for the recognition. The UGC has come up with the notification for the benefit of the students of the region,” he added.

Pradhan said the university will get necessary grants after receiving recognition under section 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956. “The university should submit required documents to get this recognition. This institution will help the students of tribal dominated Kalahandi and its nearby districts to fulfil their ambition,” he added.

The commission provides financial assistance to eligible colleges which are included under section 2(f) and declared fit to receive central assistance (UGC grant) under section 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956.
In September 2019, the state government had converted the Kalahandi University as affiliating universities. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik had given his approval for this. Initially, the state government had given unitary university status to the Government Autonomous College, Bhawanipatna, on March 6, 2019.

Kalahandi University has 50 colleges of Kalahandi and Nuapada districts. These colleges were functioning under Sambalpur University. Government Autonomous College, Bhawanipatna, was started in 1960.
