Kejriwal to inaugurate smog tower in Connaught Place, Delhi on Monday

New Delhi, Aug 19 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will inaugurate a smog tower built in the commercial hub of the national capital next week, the AAP government announced on Thursday

The tower, situated in Connaught Place, will be inaugurated by Delhi CM on Monday, August 23.

Touted as the country’s first, the smog tower promises to clean 1000 cubic metres of air every second and reduce PM 2.5, PM 10 levels in Delhi, officials informed.

Environment Minister Gopal Rai inspected the progress of the project on Thursday and said that similar towers may come up after examining the performance and impact of the current project.

"The first smog tower of the country is being established at Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Connaught Place. The tower is estimated to clean 1000 cubic metres of air every second, helping reduce PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels in the area. The efficiency and impact of this smog tower will be very crucial for the Delhi region. If the performance of the smog tower is found to be satisfactory, then we will replicate similar smog towers throughout Delhi. I am confident that the smog-tower will yield positive results for us,” he said.

“After the inauguration, experts will start monitoring the performance of the tower and then assess its impact on the environment. We will accordingly submit a report to the government and act upon the plan,” the minister added.

The smog tower is built at a cost of Rs 20 crores. The UT government said that it will work with full force after the monsoon season. The scientists of the Delhi Pollution Control Committee will accordingly assess the performance of the tower and present a monthly report, it added.
