Afghanistan is currently in the news as the Taliban has taken over the country two decades after they were removed by the US military. The country is now in distress and people from all over the world are extending their support to the people of the country, including Indians. Many Bollywood films like 'Dharmatma', 'Kabul Express' have been shot there and celebs have fond memories of the place. A sequence of Amitabh Bachchan's 1992 film 'Khuda Gawah' was also shot there. Scenes involving a sport played while riding horses was shot in and around Mazar-e-Sharif in the 'extremely troubled times'. In 2013, Amitabh reportedly recalled the entire experience in a Facebook post. He had apparently written, 'It was supposed to be a six-day guest appearance but developed into a full-fledged role at his insistence. I cherish the memory of the movie entirely for the trip where it was shot during extremely troubled times. The Soviets had just left the country and power handed over to Najibullah Ahmadzai who was a die-hard fan of popular Hindi cinema. He wanted to meet me and we were given right royal treatment. We were treated as VVIP state guests at Mazare-e-Sharif and taken through the length and breadth of the incredibly beautiful country in airplanes with armed escorts. We received the traditional warmth of the locals who have passion of hospitality. We weren't allowed to stay in hotel... a family just vacated its home for us and moved to a smaller house. There were security problems, of course, with tanks and armed soldiers all over the streets. Still, it's been the most memorable trip of my lifetime.' Senior actress Hema Malini too recalled her experience of visiting Afghanistan several decades ago. She said, 'The Kabul I knew was so beautiful and my experience there was very nice. We had landed at Kabul Airport, which was at the time as small as the Mumbai airport, and we stayed at a hotel nearby. But eventually, we travelled to locations like Bamiyan and Band-e-Amir for our shooting and while returning back we would see these men with these long kurtas and beards, who looked like Talibanis. At that time Russians were also a force in the Afghanistan. There was no problem at that time, it was peaceful and Feroz Khan had managed the whole trip and it was a very well organised shooting.' Speaking about the current situation in Afghanistan, the actress said it's 'sad' as people are 'trying to escape from the country'. Hema Malini also noted that the 'mad rush at the airport is very scary' and that she fears for the future of the country.
